Maria Battista

Colorado Springs, Colorado

“Sculpture is a physical, haptic reality that counters modernity’s soul-crushing disembodiment.”   Maria shares the joy of sheer existence in her figurative work: “Touch the sculpture!  We’re here together in space for good reason.”  Academic preparation in literature and fine art—BA Rutgers, MA University of Kansas—and postgraduate study in Italy shaped Maria’s devotion to thematic depth and the pursuit of classical virtuosity.  Her public sculptures are installed in Colorado Springs, in her birthplace of New Jersey, and appear in galleries and art shows across the West. This year she was juried into the National Sculpture Society’s Annual Awards Exhibition and was also a winner in the members’ competition of the Portrait Society of America.
